Race Report

I've been hearing a lot about this place. I guess I was expecting a bit too much. This was supposed to be a really great track. Really fast too. Well, that's not the way I feel about it. Here's what happened...

We got to the track as we always do, around 4 PM. It was already starting to get really cold, at least for me. I guess they had had quite a bit of rain the week before and the track was almost underwater. When they called us all out for practice we really didn't want to go. The track was soup and it was cold! We finally went out after a few dozen or so karts made a few laps and I was just getting the feel of the track when my left front tire fell off! It keep getting colder and colder and the track wasn't even close to coming in so we cleaned things up a bit and went to bed.

Come Saturday morning it was still cold but the sun was out so it started to warm up pretty fast. Our practice didn't start until 11:00 am after the senior drivers had the track for about 2 hours. That gave us a pretty good track to practice on but I had a really hard time with the shape of the turns. This track is a "D" shaped track so turn 1 is almost like making an immediate turn to go back the other direction instead of a sweeping turn into the back stretch. The track was slick so if I tried to step up a little going into the turn I'd just slide off the track but if I kept it down I'd come out too high and have to get into the brakes really hard to get the kart to turn. Nothing I tried seemed to ever feel good. I just wasn't fast.

When qualifying came I did my best but the motor sputtered in the turns because guess who did guess what! That's right, he overfilled the tank again. Still we qualified 5th out of 9 karts. For the light class we didn't even take the cap off the tank and went out and qualified 4th. We were ready to run the champ kart too but they only had 3 entries so they cancelled the class.

In the first race I tried my best but turn one just had me baffled. I tried everything I could think of but I wasn't fast and the other karts just drove by me one after the other, I finished 7th. In the second race I worked as hard as I could but the same thing happen. I went to the back. On about the 15th lap I started to just throw the kart into the turn which got the rear end out and then I could make the turn with out hitting the brake or lifting the throttle. Suddenly, I got fast! I wound up passing one kart to get a position back but still I came in 6th.

I guess you could say that this was a learning experience. Some of the other drivers said that the track wasn't ever like this before. I know one thing, when we come back here later this year either me or the track is going to have to get a lot better!
